In a note, Metropolitano de Lisboa reported that, in the first quarter of this year, “it registered 41.4 million passengers, figures that exceeded the same period in 2019 (pre-pandemic) by around 1.2 million”, which corresponds to “a 2.9% increase in demand compared to that same period”.

The values for the first three months of this year also correspond to “an increase of 2.3% compared to the same period in 2023”.

“These data demonstrate a clear increase in demand and a tendency towards a clear recovery and a gradual return to normal pre-pandemic levels” of Covid-19, added the public company.

In 2023, according to data from Metropolitano de Lisboa, the carrier “registered 161.8 million passengers, an increase of 28.1 million, corresponding to an increase in demand of 21.1% compared to 2022, but with a reduction in demand of 11.9 million passengers compared to 2019”.

“The positive trend observed in the last two years reflects a scenario of recovery after the challenges faced during the pandemic, an evolution that represents a progressive return to normal demand for the metro’s transport service”, concluded the note.
